“The Augúst” – History, Records, and Results

In the summer of 1965, a small group of seven or eight high school kids paid a 50-cent entry fee to compete in the first annual “City Cross Country Meet.” The event was organized by Helena High Cross Country Coach Bill Gilbert, and took place at the “Lamborn Hill Course.”

While some things have changed – the event now takes place at the beautiful Tenmile Park trails, the entry fee is up to (a still very affordable!) $10, and electronic timing made its debut in 2019 – much has remained the same. The race still brings together runners of varying ages and abilities, all looking for a late-summer speed check and a friendly contest against each other and the clock. And the proceeds still support local high school cross-country programs. We hope you can join us at this year’s installment of Montana’s second-oldest footrace! 🙂
